Hot Buttered Rum Mix

Handmade gifts are the best kind, particularly when they’re edible. Who can resist a warm cup of spiced cider on a chilly winter night? Hot Buttered Rum Mix, prettily wrapped, is a gourmet gift your family and friends will appreciate as they spoon it into their cups of cheer, sharing the best sentiments of the season.
Hot Buttered Rum Mix
Through the years I have given this to neighbors at Christmas time. For those of us who don’t drink rum, I add some rum extract to the mix. Added to hot apple juice or cider it’s super delish. For those who drink rum, I add vanilla extract, and take their word for it that it’s amazing! One friend said she used it in hot milk, a hot buttered rum mix steamer...yum!
Let’s whip up a quick batch so we can give it away. Add soft butter, brown sugar, cloves, and cinnamon to a mixing bowl and beat it with an electric mixer. Now add rum or vanilla extract depending if you’ll be serving with our without rum.
Now add it to a container, I’ve used a fun Christmas mug, jar, or something as simple as a clear plastic cup works too.
Next wrap it up with shiny cellophane or for a jar, add a lid. It’s ready to wrap and give to someone special. I like to give Hot Buttered Rum Mix with a large bottle of apple juice or cider. I also add a little card with directions about how to use it.
- ½ cup butter, softened
- ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cloves
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon rum or vanilla extract
- Combine the butter, brown sugar, cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla or rum extract in a mixing bowl. Beat until smooth with an electric mixer.
- Cover and chill until ready to serve.
For Spiced Hot Buttered Rum Punch, (with alcohol beverage): Combine all of the mix with 3-1/2 cups of water and 1-1/4 cups of spiced rum in a small punch bowl, stirring until the butter mixture melts. Serve warm with cinnamon-stick stirrers, if desired.

So there you have it, a fun neighbor gift. Now it’s your turn to share what you like to make for family and friends. Is it edible and something you share every year or do you mix it up?
