Candy Cane Simple Syrup

Sweet, that’s what I think peppermint Candy Cane Simple Syrup is, super sweeeeet! I don’t care, lick a spoon, add it to cocoa, coffee, and steamers, sweet. Brush and glaze cake layers, pour it over ice cream or cookie bars, it’s outrageously great.
Candy Cane Simple Syrup
It’s almost too easy, a Cheery Basic, but I actually made it 2 ways, and think one is the best. The first batch of Candy Cane Simple Syrup, I added about 20 mini candy canes to 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water in a medium saucepan over medium heat. It worked beautifully! I’m thinking it would be just right for most beverages and summer snow cones.
My second try I had a happy helper! She had more fun smacking candy canes with my heavy, wood rolling pin, and crushed enough to fill 1 cup. I added the crushed candy canes to 1 cup of water and 2 cups of sugar and made a “rich” simple syrup. It’s sensation, thick and lovely, perfect for topping desserts.
Try making Candy Cane Simple Syrup without any additional sugar. Just add water to your candy canes. It’s fine, just not as rich. Keep it cold, refrigerator shelf life, I’d say the basic syrup, (1:1 sugar:water ratio) it’s good for up to a month, and up to six months if it’s an extra rich syrup (2:1 sugar:water ratio). Be sure to store your syrup in a capped glass jar (in your fridge), as the syrup easily absorbs odors from other foods.
When I look at big brand peppermint syrups, it’s a great way to save money. Just think of how easy it is to unwrap a cheap box of candy canes, crunch them up in a ziplock bag, and add them to sugar and water.
Peppermint extract isn’t cheap either, it is however another option here. I always pick up some candy canes after Christmas that are at least 50% off because they last all year in a cool dark closet and I love to use them to make peppermint bark. Candy Cane Simple Syrup is another great reason to buy a bunch.
